Thyroid Cancer Treatment in Israel
Thyroid cancers are relatively uncommon. However, with timely treatment, both cure and 10-year survival rates are very high. While experts don’t yet have a definitive answer as to what causes the condition, exposure to radiation (including radiation treatment) is considered a major contributing factor.
Symptoms
Common thyroid cancer symptoms include swelling/lump in the neck, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, coughing, and neck pain. Occasionally, however, the disease will not present any symptoms.
Screening
- Bloodwork (CBC, SMAC, coagulation factors, electrolyte levels, immunology, thyroid function tests)
- If medullary cancer is suspected a calcitonin test is also required
- Whole-body PET CT scan
- Doppler US of thyroid with FNA / CNB & histopathology (if needed)
- Oncological surgeon consultation
- Preoperative endocrinologist’s consultation (if required – for example, due to hormonal imbalance)
- Radioisotope thyroid scan (if required)
The work-up takes 4 working days to complete (including histopathology results)
