Cervical cancer occurs due to growth of abnormal cervical cells. When found early, it can often be successfully treated. The disease can be diagnosed by means of a PAP-smear.
Cervical cancer causes and symptoms
HPV is the most common case of cervical cancer. Symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding, (i.e. postcoital), lower abdomen pain, and vaginal discharge.
Screening
- Revision of existing slides
- Laboratory tests (including tumor markers)
- Gynecological oncologist’s consultation with colposcopy and biopsy
- PET CT scan
- Histopathology
Treatment
Depending on findings there are several treatment options:
- If histopathology reveals leukoplakia or early-stage/minimally invasive cervical adenocarcinoma, the operation of choice is a cone biopsy. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed at Assuta Medical Center and does not require overnight hospitalization.
- In case a more advanced stage is detected, but without metastases, the treatment of choice is radical hysterectomy. Cost of procedure includes up to 4 days of hospitalization.
- In case the tumor is large or invasive, the indicated treatment is radiation therapy or remote brachytherapy. The cost of treatment depends on the number of sessions and a number of fields per session.
The final cost of Cervical Cancer Treatment in Israel program will depend on the type of therapy selected.
