Cancer vocal cords

Cancers developing in the larynx are mostly malignant. They have a significant effect on the voice, swallowing and the overall quality of life.
Common symptoms of the disease are hoarseness, painful swallowing, earache or development of a mass in the neck. When diagnosed early, the disease is curable.
Accurate diagnosis is the first step in choosing the correct treatment for patients with cancer of the larynx.

Diagnostic stage (4 working days)

  • Blood test including onco-markers – 870$
  • Total body PET CT (Positron Emission Tomography for detection of metastatic tumors) - $ 1,950
  • High resolution CT of the neck (evaluation of the anatomy of the larynx area / throat, and tumor spread), followed by the conclusion of a neuroradiologist     - $ 1.120
  • Revision existing biopsy - $ 640
  • Consultation of an onco- surgeon with indirect laryngoscopy - $ 680
  • Optional: repeat histopathology - $ 870
  • Optional: In case of a malignant tumor and metastasis - consultation by onco- chemotherapist - $ 600.

After the aforesaid preliminary examination, the patient will have three main options:

  1. In case of metastatic cancer - chemotherapy.
  2. In case of non-metastatic or benign tumor - laser excision (laryngoplasty surgery) .
  3. In case of localized tumors, without metastasis - laryngectomy.

Cost of surgery depends on the diagnosis and type of surgery.
In general one might say that

  • Laser removal of tumors of the larynx costs about $ 15,000 and more (depending on the size and location of the tumor);
  • Laryngectomy costs about $ 50,000 and more, because it involves full or partial resection of the larynx, neck dissection, etc.  The surgery lasts about 10; it is performed by the three top surgeons simultaneously. The price also includes frozen biopsies during the operation as well as postoperative biopsy and prolonged hospitalization at Assuta hospital.
